                  SCIENCE

In grade 3, we have just completed the unit on Forces and are beginning to investigate Structures and Mechanisms. They will be learning what a structure is and what materials and designs are used to make structures strong and stable to resist the natural elements.

In Grade 4, we will begin a new unit on Pulleys and Gears upon our return. Throughout this unit, students determine the impact of pulleys and gears on society and the environment. Furthermore, they will investigate the ways in which pulleys and gears change the speed and direction of, and the force put on moving objects.  At the end of our unit, students will use their problem solving skills to design, build, and test a pulley or gear system.

Language Arts

In the month of December we continued working in Guided Reading groups to analyse the reading strategy of Connections (text to text; text to self; and text to world). We will sum-up this reading strategy and begin to learn more about the reading strategy of Predictions.

In writing, students will build their descriptive vocabulary and learn to use extensive details in order to describe objects and circumstances. This will lead into the creation of fiction and/or non-fiction narrative.

Students will also contunue to write entries in thier Writer’s Notebook and complete Word Study activities that focus on Prefixes, Roots & Suffixes.

In Oral Communication, we are studying speaking skills through various activities such a Sharing Chair, and through Jigsaw Groupings.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

Celebrating your child’s birthday is a wonderful event.

Since Cornell Village is a “Nut-Free” school, we encourage parents not to bring food (cupcakes, candies, and cookies) for the class to enjoy on your child’s special day.

You are welcome to distribute non- food items such as stickers, pencils and knick-knacks.
